I would add the term MINDFUL to the equation. Being purposeful is important. Being
mindful helps ensure that we as parents do not get caught up the trap of being so
focused on a goal that we lose sight of what is happening in the moment. BE HERE NOW
is some of the best advice I can think of for parents. Keep the goal in the back of
your mind and your child in the front. What is happening for them right now? This is
fresh in my mind as we returned today from a 3-day college tour with my 17 year old
son. It was easy to forget that while my wife and I may be consumed thinking about
colleges, grades, and ACTs, etc., (and stressing out a bit) he is thinking more
about what he faces in school this week and Spring Break coming up next week. Yes,
college is part of his thinking but not uppermost. By being able to step back and
see the world from his perspective, we have a better chance of seeing the goal
actualized.

I love the term MINDFUL!
ReplyDeleteMindful of all of our words and more importantly, all of our actions when parenting our children. We are our children's most important role model. How we respond to them as well as others plays a large part in how they will learn to live their life.
Amidst the rush of today's world, slow down and take the time needed to nurture the relationships that are most important in our lives. Stop and listen. I have learned, especially with my teenage children, sometimes all that is needed is a sincere ear and a smile. Enjoy the small moments!
